SPCA of Central Florida VOLUNTEERS
Last year a number of volunteers worked together to raise $786 for beds for our shelter dogs. This year we will again be selling homemade dog treats and homemade bandanas at a booth at Paws in the Park. All proceeds this time will be used to purchase canned and other supplemental food for skinny dogs at the shelter, and for boxes of treats such as milkbones and liver snaps, and splurges such as Pupperonis. The more treats and bandanas volunteers make for us to sell, the more money we will raise for goodies for our doggies!
I think most of us would agree that it makes us feel good to feed skinny dogs food they like to supplement their kennel diet. It also is fun and beneficial when we use treats as rewards, for training, and to help potential adopters bond with their dog. And what volunteer hasn't used a treat to lure a dog to come to you so you can get the leash on when exercise time is over?
With the money we raise this year, we want to ensure a supply of supplemental food and treats is always in the Den.
Just be sure you never feed anything in the kennels, please.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
* Make Turkey Tidbits, Peamutt Butter, or Sweet Spots Dog Treats. Recipes must be followed so ingredient labels are accurate. Recipes below.
* Make Dog Bandanas -- this year we want to raise our price to $5 each, so all bandanas need to be double-sided. Instructions and suggestions below.
* We are happy to take cash or checks (made out to SPCA of Central Florida) if you prefer to help that way. Just put it in the donation jar on Diane Anderson's desk.
The more treats and bandanas we make, the more we can sell!
PLEASE NOTE THIS EFFORT IS ORGANIZED BY A COUPLE OF VOLUNTEERS. IT IS NOT UNDER THE LEAD OF THE VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, COMPLAINTS OR COMPLIMENTS, PLEASE POST THEM ON THIS BLOG or CALL SUSAN BELL 407 617 6501
Recipes (same for each one as last year; these were the 3 best-selling varieties)
PEAMUTT BUTTER TREATS
1/4 cup peanut butter
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup oatmeal
preheat oven to 375
Combine peanut butter, oil, and water. Gradually add flour, then oatmeal. Blend. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 20-30 minutes at 375.
Cool. Pack into a large freezer bag labelled with type of treats and your name. (We will divide them evenly and package in decorative bags for sale.) Store in a freezer until you can bring to Volunteer Den by Feb. 9. Put in the freezer there to keep them fresh until repackaged and sold.
SWEET SPOTS
3 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup water
1 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup carob chips [NEVER USE CHOCOLATE FOR DOGS!]
Carob chips are sold in bins in Whole Foods and in larger Publix in the Greenwise section; they are sold in bags in Chamberlains Natural Foods.
Preheat oven to 350
Stir together flour and baking powder. Set aside. Whisk together molasses, water and oil in a separate bowl. Add eggs one at a time, then the vanilla. Stir until blended. Stir dry ingredients into wet. Blend in carob chips. Drop dough in small spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes, until golden brown.
Cool. Pack into a large freezer bag labelled with type of treats and your name. (We will divide them evenly and package in decorative bags for sale.) Store in a freezer until you can bring to Volunteer Den by Feb. 9. Put in the freezer there to keep them fresh until repackaged and sold.
TURKEY TIDBITS
1 jar turkey baby food
1/2 can chicken gravy
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Preheat oven to 350
Combine flour, wheat germ, and garlic powder. Add baby food and gravy. Mix well.
Add a little water if needed for dough to hold together. Put in refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or until not too sticky to handle.
Flour your hands and break off small pieces of dough, about the size of a dime. Roll piece into ball and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Flattn ball of dough to make a 'button.' Bake for 10-15 minutes at 350 or until firm.
Cool. Pack into a large freezer bag labelled with type of treats and your name. (We will divide them evenly and package in decorative bags for sale.) Store in a freezer until you can bring to Volunteer Den by Feb. 9. Put in the freezer there to keep them fresh until repackaged and sold.
DOG BANDANA PATTERNS;
Think bright colors, holiday patterns and colors,colors for fall, Halloween, Valentines Day, etc.
PLEASE USE COTTON FABRIC ONLY.
MEDIUM SIZE BANDANAS;
*These are the best sellers as they fit most dogs.
(You can buy quilting squares at JoAnn Fabrics and cut them to size. They are affordable and come in lots of bright colors and cute patterns.)
Start with a piece of cotton fabric 18"x18". (Cut fabric if necessary to make an 18"x18" piece.)
Pull the right bottom side of fabric up to the left upper side of fabric to make a triangle.
Iron all sides of fabric under 1/4 " to make a hem all around.
Now fold the fabric back into a triangle and sew or glue closed(use washable fabric glue). You can hand stitch these if you don't want to use a sewing machine.
You will have finished triangle that can be used on both sides.
***Please do not make one sided bandanas.
LARGE BANDANAS;
Same as medium bandanas,but use fabric that is 23"x23" or a little larger.
SMALL BANDANAS;
Same as above,but use fabric that is 12"x12".
**Please do not use fabric that is smaller than 12"x12". Bandanas that are a little too big on a dog can be tied tighter, but ones that are too small cannot be used.
THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO HELP OUR SHELTER DOGS!
